A team of researchers from MIT and the University of Pennsylvania recently reported on a study on cats in the cat community — a study focused on finding out if cats can avoid humans for longer periods of time than dogs.

The researchers examined about 700,000 square meters of the U.S. urban environment in 2013 and they found that dogs ate less than cats, regardless of how they ate. They also found that cats did better off eating fruits and vegetables than fruits and veggies.

These findings suggest that cats are on the rise and have become something of a household animal, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture promising in an upcoming study, "Cats and Humans in an Urban Environment," that the introduction of cat litter will mean the world is entering a new era of companion animal food consumption.

However, there are still questions to be answered before the new law gets to work.

"We're not sure whether people might have a hard time telling the difference between cats and dogs because dogs don't use those same gestures," said lead study author Katelyn Fittska.

What the research says

The researchers say that using a "cat for dinner" method would help to explain why some people think cats are all natural and others are animals that are not.

"It seems that the pet-owner doesn't get the full story," explained study author, Peter Puzio.
