My colleague Tom Watson has a slightly different take on things. In the first part of our study, cats in London were found to be highly sensitive to odors and smell even when they were in bed or the toilet, so when we looked at cat-specific responses to different odors, we could learn about their body odor levels. This was particularly intriguing, because London had no particular odor signature that is found outside the city (this might be why cats can have different reactions to different odors, such as their desire or desire to avoid certain people or foods).

In contrast, our study found that cats are significantly more likely to be sensitive than other pet species, due partly to a simple fact of our work and partly to their ability to be so sensitive to different environments, such as those found in the wild; this fact is known to influence their response to different smells, especially in response to heat (Pfisto et al. 2007).

"The question is, how do cats get away with that?" this post-doctoral researcher asks in a video interview.

"Cat avoidance is a pretty simple one for a lot of non-human primate species, and the fact that cats are able to navigate certain environments in a lot of different ways also supports what's at the core of what makes such a unique behavior so remarkable, as opposed to simply being able to ignore certain things and have them all in one place and
