Kliff said as far as the cats go, she doesn't think it's a big risk, but that it does raise other concerns.
Lone wolves can breed, even in the forest, she said.
"They are not wolves," she said.
The Maine Department of Conservation says the wolves must be kept near lakes during periods of high snowfall, freezing temperatures and drought, or not at all. They live along the west coast of New Hampshire, in the western United States.
But that still can't be guaranteed, and wildlife biologists say the birds need to be kept at higher elevations when it comes to winter protection.
"They need to be in their habitat very closely to make sure they get snow and to keep the animals out that they need to breed because of the high humidity or cold. That's what we do best, we are extremely careful about them, and we would like to see them have a better summer," said Steve Smith, Maine State University director of wildlife.
He said no one knows how many of these animals have been successfully breeding. Some scientists say they'd rather keep coyotes or wolves.
The Maine Department of Conservation says there are 10,819 wolves caught each year. Some of them are breeding on the Maine River so far and they should be moving somewhere by spring or early summer.
