"You can walk around in the winter and see the animals in their natural habitat with good understanding," said Dr. Joseph Meehan. "You get to learn about different species in different habitats, from trees to pines." Some species, including pines, are more difficult to identify without the aid of eyes.
The team was able to reconstruct 3,852 species of pines – from 1,050 known species, down to just a few smaller species. They used the data from more than 3,400 mammal specimens and the National Centre for Animal Science to provide the insights on species and climate. Scientists also collected specimens of the species that provide new insight into human evolution.
The discovery will open up new possibilities for scientists to study new species. "A lot of this work that we had done before the 1960s when most species were found are actually extinct in the wild now," said Dr. Joe Meehan, who also co-authored the paper with Dr. Charles K. O'Grady, a UC Santa Barbara professor emeritus who oversaw the project.
