The scientists behind the study also believe that a carbon dioxide sequestering rule could be adopted in the near term. If it are enacted, the results could dramatically improve agriculture's carbon footprint and dramatically improve environmental sustainability for the many millions of farm animals on this planet.

"As the climate warms, we're going to be facing more impacts than we would like to put on the table," said Broussard, a professor of earth and water science at Brown University in New York City. The Earth and Water Institute of Greater Boston has estimated that by 2016, 20 million people will die due to warming or die to air pollution.

The idea of capturing carbon from the atmosphere would be a logical step toward limiting emissions in other forms of pollution, such as industrial or environmental uses, he said.

"I think it's really exciting that more people will want to clean-up their environment with the type of action we're planning these days," he said. "We have a long way to go. I believe we're going to see more and more people turn to carbon capture and sequestration to address their climate challenges."
