how to care for jade plants indoor," said Scott Zeller, a professor of biological sciences at UC Berkeley, and lead author on the new report. "And why not? You tell him to pick cotton."
In that same study, Zeller and his colleagues used laboratory tests to estimate how the plants could respond to a variety of treatments that were typically applied without them. The plants can resist one particular treatment, said Zeller, since the bacteria do not recognize it.
Their results "suggest that when used without chemicals, the plants responded to the treatment effectively and were treated according to the exact same parameters that other plants would respond to," he said.
The research has shown the plants can adapt to a wide range of different compounds, but the team also found that the more "good" chemicals the plants applied, the better protected they were against the chemicals.
The team is taking this new approach, Zeller said, so they can improve the health of plants once again in the future, perhaps by finding more ways to prevent damage to plants or remove bacteria.
"It's been good to see that these chemicals are really good when used well," he added.
