The California state Department of Natural Resources began investigating the contamination after officials observed small amounts of contaminated soil in two residential buildings and a public park.

The lead paint could be contaminated because it had a chemical composition similar to potassium lead. Another chemical that can contribute to lead poisoning is arsenic. It is a carcinogen that affects many types of metal including wood, glass and even aluminum.

"It's safe and that's why I'm proud because a lot of what's going on," said Steve Vinson, the director of the nonprofit community development business that is helping cover the costs of cleanup.

Vinson worked on a public school project at the University of California, Berkeley, to use recycled recycled lumber in a neighborhood of about 30 residents during the early 1980s. That allowed the school district to produce the school wood and compost.

"No matter if it was one of those items you do to your backyard or someplace with a few people, you know you've gone through some pretty nasty," he said.

By the afternoon after the site cleanup, Vinson said, the soil was completely in clean form.

The EPA has no current plans for further cleanup and is working with local officials.
