The research team had developed a plan to replace the existing power towers and replace the existing towers with new and larger, higher-tech, more efficient units from other agencies, including the federal government. The new towers would include a 10.7-megawatt wind turbine, a 24 megawatt water heater and a 4 MW power plant, according to the report.
"I don't think this is a coincidence, or any good project will be approved with those features and that's the most important thing right now," said Chris Hager, an expert on climate change and energy strategy for the federal federal agency. "If you look at existing infrastructure, and it would be a big challenge when it's on a lot of these projects that you can't come up with a concrete model plan for how to do it, then you're missing an opportunity to really try and make it better and take things into consideration."
Hager said he plans to explore this project in another state. He is also exploring potential sites in New York, Pennsylvania and Indiana, as well as additional sources in North Carolina, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Tennessee.
If completed, the project would represent a major step toward addressing climate change in the U.S. and a significant cost boost for the nation's entire electricity system, according to Environmental Defense Fund research team member Mark Miller.
